Spring is on the horizon and we’re delighted that with it brings the return of our first Fireworker, Emma, who is back from maternity leave. The last eight months may have flown by but it’s great to have Emma back in the office! Working part-time initially, to ensure she can successfully manage the necessary juggling act, we’re keen to be as flexible as possible to ensure a successful and positive start back to work.
A quick Google search will show you that achieving a work / family life balance remains one of the biggest challenges for parents in the UK and beyond. Clare and I continue to support our team as much as we can in managing their work and family commitments, and endeavour to achieve a balance ourselves too. Frankly, most of the time, it’s an ongoing organisational feat to manage the different priorities. Certainly, the fast-paced nature of PR and requirement to meet client demands promptly will never change. But in many ways we thrive on this and if ever there was a training ground for juggling – it’s agency life.
Luckily the digital era has helped us achieve our personal and professional goals – on the whole at least. We may well get teased by our kids that our phones are never far from our sight, whether it’s checking emails or taking calls from clients or journalists. However, we’re really proud to inspire our children about how it’s possible to run your own business, regardless of your gender and whether or not you’re a parent juggling family life. It might require a few compromises and ongoing motivation, but it’s worth it.
We’ve also learnt that people (especially PR professionals) rarely deliver the results if they aren’t passionate about what they do – and job satisfaction is an important part of that. It’s a tricky job developing a supportive yet progressive company culture that challenges people too. However, in the four years since starting Firework, we’ve equally learnt the value of loyal and committed team members – focusing on this definitely merits the effort to be able to retain our key people.
We’ll soon be celebrating Emma’s imminent fourth anniversary at Firework, so we’re committed to ensuring a smooth return to achieve this milestone too.
We’re continually encouraged by the commitment we receive from staff in return for the flexibility we offer; we’re reading more and more that it is this flexibility that people are looking for. After all, if you’ve spent years developing a career in PR, you don’t want to have to shelve it just because you start a family.
If you’re looking for a more flexible approach to your communications career and are interested in finding out more, get in touch; we’d love to talk to you: [email protected]
